Since the end of WWDC21, when the new betas were released and installed, we’ve been learning about new features coming to Apple devices on a regular basis. While iOS 15 is compatible with iPhones as old as the iPhone 6s, Some iOS 15 features are only available on the iPhone XS and newer.
9to5Mac provided a list of all the macOS Monterey specific features coming to M1 Macs last week. Now it’s time to reveal which iOS 15 features will be exclusive to iPhones equipped with the A12 Bionic processor or newer, which includes the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE (2nd gen), iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 Pro.
Here are all of the iOS 15 features only available on the iPhone XS or newer:
Spatial Audio on FaceTime: feature provides a sound area that allows discussions to flow as naturally as they do face to face. The sounds of your pals are dispersed such that they appear to be coming from the direction in which they are on the call.
FaceTime Portrait Mode: With iOS 15, you can blur the background of a call to put the focus on you, however, this feature will only work on iPhones with the A12 Bionic processor.
Immersive walking directions on Maps: Only newer iPhones will be able to use Apple Maps’ new interactive 3D globe, which has dramatically better information for mountain ranges, deserts, forests, seas, and other features.
Immersive walking directions on Maps: Get where you’re going with step-by-step directions displayed in augmented reality.
Live Text in Photographs: With iOS 15, text in all of your photos is interactive, allowing you to perform capabilities such as copy and paste, lookup, and translation. Photos, Screenshots, Quick Look, and Safari all support Live Text, as do live previews with a Camera.
Visual Look Up: To highlight recognizable items and scenes, swipe up or hit the information icon on any photo. Learn about prominent art and locations throughout the world and flora and flowers in the wild, novels, and pet breeds.
New animated backgrounds on Weather: There are now hundreds of animated backdrops to choose from that more properly portray the sun’s location, clouds, and precipitation.
On-device speech processing: With iOS 15, unless you want to share it, the audio of your requests is now handled exclusively on your iPhone. The Apple Neural Engine’s power allows speech recognition models to be as good as server-based speech recognition.
Keys in the Wallet: With an iPhone XR/XS or newer, you may add home keys, hotel keys, workplace keys, and vehicle keys to your wallet.
iPhone 12 exclusive features in iOS 15
There are three features that are only available with the iPhone 12:
Panorama photos: The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro’s Panorama mode has reduced geometric distortion and better catches moving subjects while decreasing image noise and banding.
Enhanced 5G connectivity: Support for backing up to iCloud and restoring from an iCloud backup, streaming audio and video on Apple and third-party apps, downloading higher-quality Apple TV+ content, syncing photos to iCloud Photos, updating Apple News+ articles for offline reading, and downloading machine learning models are all enhanced by faster 5G connectivity.
When Wi-Fi access on networks you visit occasionally is poor, or when you are connected to captive or unsecured networks, the iPhone 12 line now automatically prioritizes 5G, so you can enjoy quicker, safer connections.
5G preferred over Wi-Fi: Apart from all of these iOS 15 features, some need an iPhone 7 or iPhone 8, which means that while Apple will offer iOS 15 to iPhone 6S and SE (1st gen) users, they will be missing out on some features, such as:
Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking: listeners with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max can receive an even more immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience. An iPhone 7 is required.
Walking Steadiness: is a first-of-its-kind health statistic for the iPhone that can help you understand your risk of falling. An iPhone 8 or newer is required.
