ColorOS 12 Release Date, Eligible Devices, Expected Features, and More

The upcoming Android 12 beta version will most likely be the final beta build of the future Android OS. Smartphone manufacturers have already begun development on their next custom skin, which will run on Android 12. And Oppo is no exception; this year, the firm will launch ColorOS 12, which, as the name implies, will operate on top of Android 12. According to the reports, ColorOS 12 will bring some big UI changes to Oppo phones, as well as a slew of additional improvements. You can learn about ColorOS 12 features, Eligible Devices, Release Date, and more in this post.

Oppo launched its latest custom skin – ColorOS 11 – on September 14th of last year. A large number of Oppo phones released in the last two years have already received the Android 11 upgrade based on ColorOS 11. However, testing on a few pending phones is still ongoing. I’m hoping Oppo will soon release ColorOS 11 for pending products as the firm shifts its emphasis to ColorOS 12 based Android 12. So, let’s explore more information about the ColorOS 12 custom skin.

You may check the ColorOS 12 release date here before going on to the features and eligible devices section.

ColorOS 12 Release Date (Confirmed)

Oppo was one of the first smartphone manufacturers to release a custom skin based on Android 11 last year. Within the first week of Android 11’s release, the firm debuted its ColorOS 11 skin. Because the stable version of Android 12 is yet to be released by Google, Oppo hasn’t said anything about its future skin. And I’m hoping that the firm will do the same this year.

August 27th – Oppo’s virtual assistant, Breeno, revealed today that Oppo’s custom skin version 12 will be released on September 13th.

7th of September – Oppo has announced that ColorOS 12 will be released in mid-to-late September via its ColorOS account on Weibo. ColorOS 12 has also been teased by the firm. Here’s the ColorOS 12 teaser tweet.

When Oppo officially unveils its next skin, ColorOS 11, we’ll update you with additional information regarding the release date. Let’s look at the ColorOS 12 features now.

ColorOS 12 Features (Expected)

Oppo’s ColorOS 12 is set to bring major user interface changes to the Oppo phones. Not only this, but the company is also preparing to bring some elements from its spin-off brand’s custom skin Hydrogen OS. Here are some features and changes we’re expecting to come with ColorOS 12 based Android 12 update on Oppo smartphones.

HydrogenOS UI Elements

In China, OnePlus dropped its HydrogenOS skin in the favor of Oppo’s ColorOS. Not only this but earlier this month, OnePlus announced its merger with Oppo. As HydrogenOS is dead, there are some rumors, that Oppo will bag some UI elements of HydrogenOS for the upcoming ColorOS 12. Below we attach allegedly leaked screenshots of the clock app from the next version of ColorOS, flaunting UI elements of HydrogenOS.

More Smoother Interface

Oppo’s ColorOS 11 is the smoothest custom skin in its competition. We’re expecting that the upcoming ColorOS 12 skin will be just as smooth as its forerunner. It feels buttery smooth on high-end phones like Oppo Find X3 Pro or Oppo Reno 6 Pro, thanks to the 120Hz refresh rate panel support. Oppo may also adopt some new animations to flaunt the smoothness of ColorOS.

New Notification Bar

Oppo is going to revamp the notification center on the ColorOS. And the leaks are also suggesting the same. Talking about changes, then Oppo will increase the transparent effect in the updated notification bar, it looks more similar to Xiaomi’s control center. Not only this, but we can also see major changes in the UI of the default file manager. Here’s your first look at the ColorOS 12 control center and file manager.

New Widgets and Customization

The new widgets are the centerpiece attraction of the upcoming Android OS, i.e. Android 12. And there’s no doubt, it is also coming to every other Android smartphone. Google gives a refresh to the widgets system on Android, and the new widgets on Android 12 are great. However, it remains to be seen whether Oppo will also put some changes to it or it is going to be the same as Android 12 default widgets, which we’ve seen on Pixel Phones during the Android 12 beta launch presentation.

Updated Settings App

Apart from the afore-listed changes, the leaks are also suggesting that Oppo is going to bring an overhaul to the UI of the Settings app with the release of ColorOS 12 based Android 12. The current app looks very clean, it has minimal icons. Now the company is set to bring colorful icons to the Settings app.

Improved Privacy and Security

Android 12 comes with a big list of privacy controls. Now users can see the camera or microphone icon on the top right corner of the screen when an app is using it. And the best thing is users can easily change the permission of the app by tapping on the camera or microphone indicator. Google also adds a Privacy Dashboard. This feature will show you details of if any app is using any sensor like a Camera, Microphone, Location, or any other sensor along with the timeline.

Apart from these changes, you can also access features such as scrolling screenshots, notification improvements, On-device app search, easier Wi-Fi sharing, One-handed mode, new emojis, improved auto-rotate, AVIF image support, and more. Yes, you can use the essential features of Android 12 OS on Oppo phones after upgrading to ColorOS 12.

Expected Eligible ColorOS 12 Devices (also known as Compatible Phones)

Oppo is going to release the upcoming ColorOS 12 based on the Android 12 update to a flurry of Oppo phones. Although, as of now, there’s no official list shared by the company on which phones will get the upcoming skin, as per the past few year’s trends we’re expecting it will be available to many affordable, mid-range, and upper mid-range phones.

If you’re using the Oppo smartphone and want to know whether your phone is eligible for the upcoming ColorOS 12 skin or not, then here’s a list of phones that we’re hoping will get ColorOS 12 based Android 12 update. Now let’s move on to the list.
