A man in Maharashtra, India, died on Sunday after a Nothing sub-brand CMF Phone 1 detonated in his pocket while riding a motorcycle. Another passenger on the bike was seriously injured, according to Marathi news channel ABP Majha.
At the moment, the incident’s specifics are restricted. According to ABP Majha, the victim’s phone, which was purchased just over a month ago, exploded in his pocket as he was riding, leading him to lose control of the motorcycle. This caused the tragic accident, while the other person sustained injuries.
The reason of the explosion is still being investigated. However, according to multiple sources, the phone’s battery could have been the issue.
It’s alarming, to say the least, especially given that the CMF Phone 1 was only released in July 2024. Nothing has yet been said publicly about the incident.
This is the first recorded case of a CMF Phone 1 explosion, yet smartphone explosions are relatively uncommon. Previously, OnePlus and an iPhone 14 Pro Max burst while charging in November 2018.
This incident is a reminder for all smartphone users to prioritize safety. Keep these essential tips in mind:
- Be aware of overheating: If your phone feels unusually warm, especially when charging or during intensive tasks, turn it off and let it cool down in a well-ventilated area. Avoid using damaged or non-certified chargers.
- Look for signs of battery swelling: A bulging back panel can indicate a swollen battery, a significant safety hazard. If you notice this, stop using the phone immediately and contact the manufacturer or customer support.
Keep software updated: Manufacturers often release updates that address battery management issues. Keeping your phone’s software up-to-date can help mitigate potential risks.
