After three developer preview builds, the Android 12 Beta is now available for Pixel. It was published soon before Google I/O 2021 and is available to anybody with an Android device that qualifies. The Android 12 Beta GSI is now available for all Android phones with treble support, in addition to the Android 12 Beta. It allows users to use the newest Android 12 Beta even if their phones have not yet received the update. If you want to try out the newest Android 12 Beta, you can grab the Android 12 Beta 2.1 GSI here.

The Generic System Image (GSI) is an Android project that aims to deliver a clean Android experience with the most recent Android version. It’s based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which has been accessible since Android 8.1.

The GSI allows developers and beta testers to use the newest Android version to do activities such as testing Android apps after they have been developed. Fortunately, the Android 12 Beta GSI is now available, which means that if your Android phone supports treble, you can enjoy the all-new UI.

In case you didn’t aware, Android 12 has a lot of new features. The Material theme, which they are dubbing Material You, is one of the key aspects of Android 12. It will adjust the accent color to match your background, similar to Windows 10. In comparison to previous Android upgrades, Google promises it would use less RAM. It also has improved privacy and security, as well as smooth movements and animations.

Let’s get to the download area now. Make sure you have an Android phone with treble support and an unlocked bootloader.

The connections are made available dependent on the hardware architecture of the device. As a result, check sure you’re downloading the right picture file for your device. You may check the architecture using ADB commands or other third-party apps that examine system information.

If you’re unfamiliar with GMS, it’s a bundle that contains all of Google’s major services. So you may choose between the Android 12 GSI with GMS and the Android 12 GSI without GMS. It’s because some Google applications aren’t available in some areas.

It is neither difficult nor difficult to install Android 12 GSI. Before putting it into action, be sure you’ve gone through all of the processes. The following are the prerequisites for installing Android 12 GSI.

  • On your computer, install the adb and fastboot drivers.
  • Unlock your phone’s bootloader
  • Check to see if your phone can handle a treble project.
  • Make sure you have a complete backup of your phone.
  • Get the right GSI for your device by downloading it.
  • Make certain you are doing so at your own risk.

How to Install Android 12 Beta GSI

Enable USB Debugging

If you have unlocked the bootloader, then you already know how to access developer options. So enable USB Debugging from the developer options.

If you don’t recall the process, go to Settings > About Phone and tap 7 times on Build Number. It depends on the device you have, like for the OnePlus phone tap on OxygenOS version, for Xiaomi tap on the MIUI version, and so on. Now go back to Settings and search for developer options and then open it. In the developer options enable USB Debugging which will be somewhere on the top section.

Extract Android 12 Beta GSI

Save the Generic System Image file to your PC. The file will be in zip format, so extract it. Copy the system.img and vbmeta.img files from the extracted folder to C:/adb or the platform tools (Android SDK tool) if you have downloaded it.

Boot your phone into Fastboot Mode

USB Debugging must be enabled for this to work (skip if you know the shortcut keys to boot your phone into bootloader mode).

Connect your phone to your PC via USB connection, and be sure to allow it to use the Debugging function on your device. It will not inquire if you have previously granted permission. Now open CMD on your computer and type the command.

adb reboot bootloader

Your phone will boot into bootloader/Fastboot mode.

Flash GSI to install Android 12 Beta

To avoid a bootloop, you must disable verify boot before flashing the GSI. Open the CMD/Command window by navigating to the C:/adb folder or the platform tools folder, where the system.img file is stored. To open CMD on any given place, simply type cmd in the path location in file explorer.

  • Now enter the below command to disable verify boot:

fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img

  • Now wipe all the data for clean install using the mentioned command:

fastboot erase system

  • Now the last part, install Android 12 Beta GSI on your phone with the given command:

fastboot flash system system.img

  • Now Wipe the userdata partition once the installation is done:

fastboot -w

  • That’s all, now you can reboot and enjoy Android 12 on your phone.

fastboot reboot

After the reboot, Android 12 Beta will be available on your phone. Before the official release, you may try out all of the features. If you notice any issues, you can also report them to Google.

You don’t need to install GSI or unlock the bootloader if you have the newest flagship phone because Android 12 beta is now available for some of the best phones from various OEMs. Simply follow the instructions on the OEMs forum to get the newest Android 12.
